about

the return of light

The sun recedes one final time behind the burnt embers
Of a December’s orange afternoon.
Cold and silent, the calm that follows
Takes the evening star in the long embrace;
Waiting for a curtain of stars — like snowflakes
On a desert lake they alight, once there, now gone;
Playing to the senses in the liquid black of darkened night.

And then a breath…
A pause, the briefest skip in perpetual march.
For the Earth cannot hear the daily cacophony
In this one moment;
So deafening is the stillness.
How can this solitude be; this moment
Of absolute peace in a world torn by itself;
By hate; by ignorance;
By human descent into madness and rage.
Searching for their purpose in God’s name and word;
Finding only woe and discontent in the perverse manifestos
Of the mad and self-anointed.
How can this moment be so absolute in its quiet
Amid the cries of unsated multitudes...

A silent, fervent prayer….

Light returns amid the darkest embrace of men’s fears;
From candle and brightly colored lights;
From moonrise and warming hearth;
From Luminaria and Menorah.
Light returns in a single communal act
To signify the banishment of darkness once more
To another year.
A year anew with hope that the better way,
The brighter day lies ahead.
Light returns at the turn of nature’s plan
And hope.
Light returns to the world;
May peace follow closely in hand.
